the music of Sequoia combines bluegrass, newgrass, folk, vintage & pop tunes into its acoustic blend. Al & Deborah share their favorite musical styles and years of musical history with the audience. When son Luke is in town, he joins in as a walking bass player and harmony support!
Bluegrass rhythms & harmonies form the strength of these musicians. Al Brinkerhoff's roots have remained with him throughout the years of pop, country, blues, jazz and new-grass style groups he has participated in. Finger Pickin’ Good, Willy & the Poor Boys, and Country Pride featured both Al’s banjo & dobro abilities. In 1996 Al was awarded the Oregon State Dobro Champion, followed by winning the 1999 Rockygrass Colorado Dobro Championship. Joining the well known Ashland, Oregon group "Foxfire”, Al performed in many west coast festivals including backing up Rose Maddox at Grass Valley, the Tacoma Wintergrass, Prospect & Myrtle Creek Bluegrass events. A European tour with Foxfire in 1998 was followed by an invitation for Al to perform as one of only three USA artists in the "Dobrofest 2000" in Slovakia. In 2007, as a member of the Emy Phelps Band, the group performed at the Jacksonville Britt festival, opening for Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder. Recently, Al has toured with the cowgirl songwriter Joni Harms, throughout the Pacific Northwest and as far away as Paris, France, highlighting his steel guitar talents. For Sequoia, Al kicks it up a notch bringing out his banjo!
Deborah has sung for years with local southern Oregon music groups for open mikes, fundraisers, & art nights. As the lead female singer in Way Out West & Sequoia, Deb performed with Al & Luke at many eateries, private parties, weddings, as well as hosting music jam sessions in the southern Oregon area. Sequoia frequently opened the evenings at the 2007 through 2010 Thunder Ridge Ranch Summer Concert Series, along with openers for the Grants Pass Rogue Theater. Local concert performances include “Winterfest” in Grants Pass, Siskiyou Bluegrass Fest, Prospect Music in the Mountains & the Merlin Hot August Nights Series . Regional festival performances include the Bend, Oregon High & Dry Fest, Tyghe Valley’s Festival in 2011, Fiddlin under the Stars in Goldendale, Wa.and a new Brookings Oregon 4th of July bluegrass music even.
Lucas Brinkerhoff has been playing mandolin and bass for several years, and developed his strong harmony abilities singing as a member of well known high school vocal group, “Free Design”, as well as an Academic Music Master finalist from NVHS in 2007. In 2008-2009, he joined the Eugene based Mossy Top String Band, along with subbing in with the stand-up for the Green Mountain Bluegrass Band from the Willamette Valley. Luke joined Sequoia summer 2009 performing at the Jefferson State Festival, Hot August Nights Merlin Summer Series, the Lost Creek Marina, The Dancing Otter, the Cottage, and Taylor’s country Store, as well as the many festival venues of Sequoia listed earlier and currently warming up the sound of Rainey & the Rattlesnakes out of Ashland.
Sequoia often features special guest fiddlers as daughter Jessilyn & Will Warwick from the Poor Boys Band.
